Healing Hands, Healthy Mind

Free Health Event
Health is Wealth
Check out my video at YouTube
For health concerns, the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) can offer benefits for patients that suffer from cancer and other diseases. Relieving stress may allow your body to use more things to heal because the stress and tension factors are lessened. The emotional freedom technique offers seminars and books for training yourself. The technique uses desensitization techniques with acupuncture tapping to relieve stress that is associated with a particular event. A scale of measurement is used for expressing the degree of emotional pain for the client—and while discussing a specific issue, probing questions are asked by the administrator. After more probing questions and tapping of acupressure points, the client is asked to assign a number for their emotional pain that is created when discussing and remembering this incident. Then, using the process could enable a client to express their emotional pain with a lower number, which indicates that they have less pain, with remembering the event.

The concept can be better understood by comparing how you might feel about an unpleasant event in your life. For example, you remember that you were standing on a football field, and eating a hamburger with a cherry drink, when the coach told you that a new player was going to replace you. Then you might experience anxiety and a sense of losing again, when you next eat a hamburger with a cherry drink. Remembering the event with the coach could bring back the emotional pain of losing that you may associate with the taste of the hamburger and the cherry drink. The EFT would try to help you to lower your emotional response to hamburgers and cherry drinks. If you considered your emotional pain to be at a level 8, then perhaps the technique could help you to reduce that number. "Your body is more powerful than
you can imagine…filled with life, energy, and a compelling ability for self-healing. With EFT, you can take control of that power." (Source: www.eftbenefits.com)

Cancer patients want to help fight their disease by keeping their bodies healthy.
Mesothelioma is a frightening aggressive cancer with a low rate of cure for the patients. The mesothelioma life expectancy is about 4 to 18 months. Patients that are fighting this cancer may have extreme emotional anxiety because of the mesothelioma prognosis. The events will not change because they use the Emotional Freedom Technique. But the patient may be able to free themselves from the control of stress to their bodies while they try to fight the cancer, or any illness. And having less stress may help the patient to allow more of their disease fighting abilities to attack cancer. Being able to talk about an issue, and to try to control an emotional response with EFT, may help a patient to concentrate on other things without an all consuming fear, or a blinding rage. Contributed by Melanie Bowen. Bio: Melanie is an advocate for natural health and cancer cure initiatives. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in English with a specialty in Psychology and Medical Research, she highlights the great benefits of different nutritional, emotional, and physical treatments on those with illnesses in her efforts to spread awareness.

Smile & Laugh

Laughter & Yoga

* Move (Get some exercise to release serotonin.)
* Write (Journaling or any writing exercise provides serenity and inner calm that carries you throughout the day. Try blogging.)

* Drink water (Hydrate regularly throughout the day.) I love coconut water!
* Breathe deeply (This is calming, improves the detoxification, relieves anxiety, lowers blood pressure and has many more emotional and physical benefits.) In yoga, we breathe deeply & slowly.
* Be still (Meditation can be the best option when you want to change your mood. Slowing down even for a few minutes calms your mind and invites in peace.) Altered from Source: www.ladieswholaunch.com

Keep Motivated

How to Stay Healthy
Health is Wealth
Check out my video at YouTube

Keeping yourself motivated so you can accomplish what you need and want to do requires Youthful Energy. When your body is tired from digesting heavy foods, stress, being overweight, lack of sleep, you feel fatigue or lethargic. You simply don't perform at your best if you don't have enough energy. Do you need a few cups of coffee in the morning to get going? If so, you may not be getting enough sleep. Exercising in the morning will give you more energy. I walk my dog Sparky every day and meet other dog owners early around 7-8 am on our regular route around the block. Do you ever feel sleepy or tired after lunch? If so, you probably ate too much. I bring a salad for lunch so I don't get the after-meal slump. I also breath deeply, stand up to stretch or go for a short walk if I need more energy. Before I realized the harmful effects of junk food, I used to go for a burger and fries or grab a meal at fast food joints. Then I started doing yoga, being aware of my body, my breath, the way I eat and became more health conscious. Yoga changed my life. That's why I got certified as a yoga teacher and why I love yoga so much. Co-teaching Laughter & Yoga with my friend Kim Selbert and leading doga classes near my home also gives me more energy. Laughter & Yoga at Aanand Saagar, 606, Venice Blvd, #H. Venice 90291. Come for a fun evening of dance, laughter, movement, music & party Sundays 6-7 pm! No class on 9/4.

Here's one simple trick you can use now to start your day off energized & motivated:

Every day when you wake up, prepare yourself an alkaline drink. Maintaining a proper pH level in the body is important. On a scale of 1 to 14, an ideal pH level is 6.5-7.5. (Source: eHow.com Alkaline Foods & Beverages). The cheapest and easiest way to do this is to squeeze some fresh lemon juice into your water and drink a full glass or use my Healthy Drink recipe

My other tip is to exercise daily and limit your TV or computer usage. I'm on the PCTV diet, please join me on Facebook or Twitter.

Meditation

Doga: Yoga with Dogs (HSUS online store)
I am trying to follow the Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga, the Law of Least Effort. The principle is that we can accomplish more by doing less if we’re not wasting energy struggling and trying to force outcomes that aren’t ready to manifest. In yoga, the greatest benefits come from relaxing into a pose rather than forcing your body into it. When moving into a flexibility pose, once you find the point of resistance, rather than forcing your way through it, breathe. Let go and feel your body move gently pass the resistance. Stay present with your full awareness in your body as you breathe deeply, slowly. As in life, patience is a virtue. The more you are able to embrace, rather than fight your limitations and vulnerabilities, the less limits they hold and the more balance and energy you experience.

1. Acceptance - During your yoga practice, accept your body the way it is. In daily life, practice accepting people as they are and circumstances as they occur. My dog Sparky accepts and loves me unconditionally, we often make friends with other dog lovers and owners.

2. Responsibility - In yoga, this means making the commitment to nurture your body through appropriate exercise and nutrition. Having accepted things as they are, take responsibility for the choices and actions that you take each day. Don't dwell in the past or worry about the future. Live fully in this moment. Sparky is my role model because she is always living in the present.

3. Defenselessness - There are many different schools of yoga and no one “right” way to practice. Every teacher and system has its own merit. Yoga is dedicated to awakening flexibility in body, mind, and spirit so it can accommodate and celebrate the many diverse approaches. Don’t waste your energy defending your point of view or attempting to convince others. Remain open to all points of view. Sparky is my guide since she does yoga in her own way and we walk the figure 8 (a symbol of infinity at the end of Doga: Yoga with Dogs.

Good News!

Laughter + Yoga = Mind-Body Health (Follow me on Twitter)

I woke up early to blog about Seed Bistro yesterday. Then walked with my dog Sparky to get some exercise and fresh air. It's so hot that I had a heat rash and got some relief from the cooler temperature outside. Also bought Aveeno Calamine & Pramoxine HCI anti-itch cream at CVS + Zyrtec which helped but the pill made me sleepy so I took a nap. Later on, I went to get a free mini-facial from Martha at Body Allure (Day Spa, Skin Care Center). She's great because her system is natural and non-invasive yet lifted my skin, giving it a healthy glow, more soothness + tightness. I highly recommend you to go see her if you want to look more radiant and youthful. Special deal for my followers! Refer a friend to Martha at Body Allure & get a free mini-facial!

Went to walk Sparky near the ocean and join a free yoga class at the beach. We both loved it. There were 8 of us flowing through the poses in harmony with nature & Sparky made a new friend! Can't wait to go back for more yoga. Then, I went to the “Magnificent Woman” Award (a great event) that honored my new friend Susan Szudar of Sol Inspired (UV-protective clothing) and met many nice people at the beautiful rooftop at The Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills.

As a result from my blog about Seed Bistro and my earlier meeting with Jesse a few weeks ago, Sara from www.organicsoul.com will join us tomorrow for one of my events:

Laughter & Yoga at Aanand Saagar, 606, Venice Blvd, #H. Venice 90291. Come for a fun evening of dance, laughter, movement, music & party 6-7 pm!

Eating for a Healthy Mind + Body

My Healthy Breakfast Recipe

Yogurt Parfait - I mix a bit of Lifeway Strawberry Kefir with Trader Joe's plain low-fat yogurt, put some Quaker Low-Fat Natural Granola and a few slices of strawberries on top to make a healthy breakfast.  That way, I get whole grain (good carbs), calcium, probiotic, protein, fiber and feel satisfied. What we eat and how we eat has a great effect on our sense of well-being. "We are what we eat." It doesn't take any more time to eat healthy than junk foods; it's just a matter of making healthy choices. Make the change in your diet gradually so it's possible to train the body to like healthier foods instead of junk. If you try to make too many drastic changes in a short time, your body may simply rebel. It's easier to change one meal or food group at a time.

Over the years, Ilse Klipper (the author of Coming Into Harmony) has made many changes in her own diet like eliminating refined sugar, coffee, soda, meat and processed foods. Now, we both enjoy fresh  fruits and veggies, eating healthy snacks and drinking herbal teas. As we have learned to follow a healthier diet, we notice that our bodies are becoming healthier and stronger. Each week, I will follow her exercises/ guidelines for a happy mind-body relationship and share with you what I've learned. Today, I'm reminded by the book that everything is in perfect order, just as our lives have been perfectly designed to work according to their own plan. The shift in focus from external to internal is a major turning point in the way we experience reality. We're conditioned to look outside for happiness (to pursue it) so it's hard to change. Meditate, turn within to cultivate a positive outlook - be in touch with the happiness, peace and harmony that is inside us. Observing the mind, converting negative thoughts into positive ones isn't easy but this is a powerful practice. Karma = the law of cause + effect. We reap what we've sown. Sooner or later, everything balances out. Do we have a + or - balance?

Instead of focusing on what's happening around us, we can consider the larger purpose behind the scenes. Understanding perfect balance can lessen our fears about the turmoil in this world. Then we can use our higher understanding to do good, to share our love and compassion by helping others as well as ourselves. If you have a bad situation like chronic pain, long-term unemployment or a serious illness, you could either lie in bed or sit at home feeling depressed or you could face your reality with a positive attitude and examine how to improve your condition. With a positive attitude, you might be able to use your thoughts to speed your healing or recovery. Even if the illness is terminal, you could still face each day with hope and love rather than fear because your higher self/ spirit is indestructible and eternal. Affirmative Actions + A Positive Attitude = Power to Change Direction + Better Quality of Life.

Financial & Human Resilience

Fit-Twist Wellness: Health = Wealth

Financial resilience is the ability to withstand life events that impact one's income and/or assets. Some financially stressful events such as unemployment, divorce, disability, and health problems affect individuals. Others, such as recessions, stock market downturns and acts of terrorism, affect our society as a whole.

"Research by Dr. Sharon Danes, a professor and Extension specialist at the University of Minnesota, found that there are 5 characteristics that enhance people's resilience in the face of life's changes and challenges:
  1. Positive people view challenges as opportunities and consistently "use lemons to make lemonade." They reframe situations positively and often use the expression "it could have been a lot worse" when comparing their misfortune to others.
  2. Focused people determine where they are headed in the future and stick to their goals so that life events and other barriers do not deter them.
  3. Flexible people are open to new and different options when faced with uncertainty.
  4. Organized people set priorities and develop structured approaches to manage change.
  5. Proactive people work with change rather than defend against it.
Financial resiliency is enhanced with financial resources, such as savings, health insurance, and a good-paying job. Another resource is one's human capital - defined by economists as all of the knowledge, skills, experiences, contacts, and other personal qualities that people have to "sell" to potential employers. Personal health is part of human capital because it affects job performance and productivity. Social capital also increases financial resiliency. This includes a support system of family, friends and others that can provide emotional support, financial and physical assistance during hard times. Practices that can increase financial resiliency are especially important during a tough economy. Every small positive step makes a difference.

Never consider your education or job training finished. Continue to develop new marketable skills and take care of your health (e.g., good nutrition, screening exams, and exercise) to increase your human capital) and remain employable in today's very competitive labor market."

5 Reasons to Try Yoga

Yoga at the Park

2. Lack of balance is a common cause of falls and bone fractures. Yoga can help improve your balance. (www.healthmonitor.com)

3. Yoga can help ease stress, lower blood pressure, boost your immune system and improve your mood.

5. Yoga may be a great way to exercise, relax and even relieve pain. But the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says you can do more harm than good if you practice yoga incorrectly.
  • Talk to your doctor before trying yoga if you have an injury or medical condition.
  • Practice yoga with a qualified instructor who has plenty of experience.
  • Always warm up before yoga.
  • Wear clothing that allows you to move freely.
  • Learn proper technique and the basics of yoga. If you're not sure of how to do something, ask questions.
  • Don't push yourself too hard, and stop if you have pain.
  • Drink enough water.

I love yoga and know that everyone should try it but many people I've talked to have a misconception about yoga, a bad experience in a yoga class or heard a horror story from someone they know. So they don't want to try other classes like Laughter & Yoga or Fit-Twist Yoga. I believe in being gentle with my new students and slowly building up the intensity and I always give them options to modify the poses to suit their physical conditions or to rest in-between. I remind them to breathe, to focus on their intention (what they want to get out of their yoga practice) and honor their own bodies.

Things That I Love

Love Reservage.com!
Sparky - http://fun-dogs.webs.com

Books - Coming Into Harmony by Ilse Klipper
1. I've been trying to relax, slow down & meditation is a good way to do so besides my regular yoga practice
2. It reminds me to breathe slowly, relax my body so my mind then gets quiet like while I was flowing through the yoga asanas/ poses
3. The shield of light meditation (enjoy its protective warmth & peace)
4. I agree 100% that we need to tune our bodies, not just our cars but many care more about their cars than their bodies. To have a healthy mind, we need a healthy body. Create a loving relationship with our body
5. Daily exercise is the key to good health (mental, physical, spiritual)
6. Keep a food diary - a balanced diet is the key to well-being. Create a loving relationship with our food. I love to eat - I enjoy the sight, smell & taste of my meals/ snacks

Brentwood 90049 - My home & that's why I started the A-Z Guide

Cats - I adopted Q.T. a calico female from the shelter on Jan 2000 when she was 3.5 years old. She's 14.5 now. My sister has 3 male cats (also adopted).

Dogs - I adopted Sparky, a Fit Fun Dog (real name Penny) a black & tan daschund mix from the shelter about 1.5 month ago. She's now a part of the Cheng family. My sister has has a purebred Papillon. That's why I created a photo book called Pets of Cheng Family.

Healthy Drink to start my day - Mix 1/2 cup of Pom with 1/2 cup of water, add Amazing Grass ORAC + Fortune Delight and stir. Take 1 Reserveage Resveratrol + 1 ViraLaurin Immune with drink. Tastes great & is good for me.

Exercise - I love to walk with Sparky & do yoga regularly at Corepower Yoga: CPY (1 week of Free Yoga). Aree Khoda, my favorite yoga teacher shared what Gabrielle Roth says with the class: "To sweat is to pray, to make an offering of your innermost self. Sweat is holy water, prayer beads, pearls of liquid that release your past. Sweat is an ancient and universal form of self healing, whether done in the gym, the sauna, (yoga class), or the sweat lodge. I do it on the (yoga mat). The more you dance/ flow through the yoga poses, the more you sweat. The more you sweat, the more you pray. The more you pray, the closer you come to ecstasy." I love CPY mostly because Aree really cares about yoga & people. I feel as if we were best friends from early on. I love her classes since I feel energized & relaxed during + after class.
