Wellness Fair

Each 1st Sunday of the month, the LA City Council District 11 Office sponsors a Wellness Fair in support of the World Health Organization's Healthy Cities program.
We are seeking a Health Care/Fitness-Related Professionals who are able to provide appropriate FREE services and/or distribute FREE health-related info to Farmers Market shoppers between 10AM - 1PM the 1st Sunday for a minimum of 3 first Sundays.
This Wellness Fair is enhances the 'healthy purpose' of Farmers Market shopping.  Shoppers visit Farmers Market to purchase fresh, organic, natural or health-oriented food products & supplies.

Location:
West LA Municipal Plaza, 1645 Corinth Ave. 90025, near intersection Santa Monica & Sawtelle Blvds.

The popular neighborhood event attracts 600 - 800 adults & family walking traffic primarily from surrounding blocks.  Additionally the venue offers food concessionaires with seating area, a LIVE performance stage & a children's play & learning area. Many shoppers devote hours meeting & relaxing with neighbors as they enjoy a village-like atmosphere each Sunday.
The Wellness Fair is organized by Len Nguyen, Senior Field Deputy, LA City Council District 11 & Let's Move! member.

9-10 am Walk with a Doc at Santa Monica State Beach

Put on your fitness gear & join us forms 60-minute walk. Walk side-by-side with a local community Doctor. This group focuses on walking for weight-loss, reduce risk of heart disease, etc.


Free lecture - Health/ Live to be 110
Holistic health and nutrition coach Wendy Meyers shows how to eat healthy to live longer with quality. Meyers also shares the latest in nutrition research, food safety, dietary dangers and other relevant topics. 

P.S. The City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks offers Free Summer Lunch to all kids and teens ages 1 through 18 at more than 100 parks starting June 10, 2013 until August 9, 2013. I Love Walking

Los Angeles Walks is hosting its first ever fundraising dinner on Saturday, June 1--help LA Walks make LA a safer, more equitable, and convenient place to walk by backing their Kickstarter campaign, Hey, I'm Walking Here! 

Starting at the $100, you'll receive a ticket to the dinner catered by none other than LA Walks Founder, Deborah Murphy. Can't make it to the dinner? No problem! All donations will go toward the Hey, I'm Walking Here! (¡Ay, Estoy Caminando!) Campaign, and backers will receive their pick of limited edition (and pretty sweet!) LA Walks merchandise. You only have until May 31 to make a pledge.



The Every Body Walk! Collaborative is hosting a2013 National Walking Summit in Washington D.C., October 1-3, 2013. The Summit will convene national and local leaders in inspiring conversations and sessions that will build capacity, develop strategies, increase momentum and showcase best practices for increasing investments in walkability and walking.

Student leaders from UCLA's Black Pre-Health Org are producing this major community health event.  Pro Trainers from Let's Move! will lead the fitness PARTY.  This Festival hosts participants of all ages in fitness training challenges. FREE healthy EATS & snacks for all - health topics & screenings - info to 'future' UCLA students.

4/20 Health and Fitness fair at UCLA

The Pacific Islander community in California are highly susceptible and more likely to be obese or diagnosed with diseases related to obesity such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and various heart problems. The health fair has welcomed role models such as Hines Ward, Troy Polamalu, and Jillian Michaels to contribute and give workshops to the youth--all in an effort to instill healthy habits and promote a healthier more active lifestyle for the Pacific Islander and Native Hawaiian community. 
This year we will have various musical acts, pacific islander fitness experts, a health fair, exercise workshops such as rugby and hula, as well as a healthy lunch! Come out and support the cause, would love to have some Movers there!

Nutrition Education Grant

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) to solicit proposals for contracts with approximately 12 community based organizations, cities, and/or school districts in Los Angeles County to provide nutrition education in low-income communities.  Selected providers will participate in community assessment, program evaluation, and one of three primary categories: peer-to-peer education, youth engagement, or faith-based education. 

Selected providers will receive approximately $325,000 for one year, with the option to extend the term for two additional years at the same funding level, contingent on availability of funds.  Proposers will have the opportunity to submit written questions regarding the RFP; details for submitting questions are included in the RFP document.

Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity webinar

This 45-minute session will provide an overview of one of 12 Leading Health Indicator (LHI) topics released by the US Department of Health and Human Services. The event will also highlight one program’s success at addressing child obesity. 

Learning Objectives
  1. To raise awareness of the Healthy People 2020 Leading Health Indicators (LHIs) and actions that can be taken to address them.
  2. To examine the context in addressing each LHI topic.
  3. To explore how states, communities, and organizations are addressing the LHIs using innovative and evidence-based approaches.


Healthy By Design: Creating Neighborhoods that Promote Wellness will provide you the opportunity to:
  • Make the connection between how communities are planned and health
  • Hear how local communities have incorporated health in their general plan
  • Share ideas with the Office of Planning and Research as it updates the general plan guidelines

The Governor's Office of Planning and Research (OPR) is in the process of updating the state's general plan guidelines, which provide suggestions for planning our communities and can have an impact on our health. Join CPEHN and ChangeLab Solutions for an opportunity to influence the process and ensure that health and equity are incorporated in the update.
