Bike or Walk, Don’t Drive

I love to walk because I don’t need any equipment, just a pair of comfortable sneakers.

Why am I passionate about health and fitness? I see my dad suffering from back and leg pain. He doesn’t move because he is in pain, but when the physical therapist was there to make him do the exercises, he did not complain of pain. He doesn’t realize that being sedentary is the cause of much of his pain.  I have tried to educate him, but he is over 90 years-old. He thinks seeing doctors and taking pills will help. He has seen many doctors and tried many different medicines to no avail. Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. By that measure, he needs help.  We associate aging with less mobility and many seniors do not exercise regularly. Thus,  they are trapped in a vicious cycle. 70% of American adults are either overweight or obese. Many of them have bad eating habits and do not exercise. We can prevent many illnesses that are linked to obesity.

Here are some facts:

1.       Being sedentary is bad for our health.  To avoid the hazards of unhealthy living, we need regular exercise.
2.       Physically active people have  a 40% decrease in cancer mortality compared to those who were inactive.
3.       A study shows that for every 2 hours of TV viewing, it increases the risk of type 2 diabetes by 14%.
4.       Another study shows 50% reduction in the risk of dementia in older persons who exercise regularly.
5.       People who are sedentary have the highest rate of heart attack. Women who exercise 3 hours or more per week (half an hour daily) cut their risk of heart attack in half.
6.       Studies found that physically active men lowered their risk of stroke by two-thirds and women decreased their risk of stroke by 50%.
7.       Bone loss progresses much faster in people who are sedentary.
8.       Exercise is good for our mental, emotional and physical health. One study showed that an hour of walking daily cut the risk of obesity by 24%.
