3 Mindful Eating Tips for the Holidays

Join the Gut Health Summit!

In this digital age, we are conditioned to look for a quick fix to our problems and so many of us are eager to google for answers. That is why I asked Kristen Joy, creator of Voluptuous Life to share some of her tips here:

1. Slow down - take a moment to check in with yourself before you eat. Know what’s really important to you.

2. Pay attention to what you eat – if you are distracted, it is easy to make bad choices or overeat

3. Give your brain time to access a lifetime of experience and wisdom

Society makes us shut down and as women, we often don’t trust our intuition. It is important to take time to check in with yourself. It’s free and easy. Like mindfulness, intuition is a tool that we either use or ignore. It takes practice to build up this skill. Once you master it, you can apply it to everything else.

Yoga changed my life. I've shared my 3 easy, simple steps to a healthy body with many women and I can empower you to be healthy inside-out. I used to eat fast food and get frozen dinners at the supermarket. Now I take time to go stock up at the Farmers Market or cook with Hello Fresh. I used to love soda, now I drink Matcha tea.

Holiday Survival Guide

Sign up for more free tips!

Due to COVID, 58 million people have filed for unemployment and 30-40 million people are expected to lose their homes by the end of the year. Depression, anxiety, and suicide at record levels, as are online alcohol and gun sales. Domestic abuse cases up over 20% vs. 2019. Kids are stuck at home when school’s where many of them are safest. On top of that, we have to deal with racial tensions and civil unrest. The upcoming election has also polarized our country even more. The holidays can also be stressful. That is why I decided to ask Nicole Benson, a Happiness Coach to do a guest post.

Here are 3 simple tools for a happier holiday season:

Although social distancing might make holiday gatherings look a little different this year, many people

have shared the stress, overwhelm and family politics (let alone actual political discussions) are still

sure to be around.

Here are a few tools to help navigate this tricky time of year if you’re in a physical, emotional or mental place you don’t want to be.*

1. Visit your happy place in your mind.

Think of a place (imaginary or real) where you feel safe, comfortable and at peace. You might be alone, or with people you love. It might be a quiet meadow with a babbling brook, or on Main Street in Disneyland with a cheerful parade going by. Maybe you’re surrounded by adorable puppies, or swinging on a hammock at a beach with clear, turquoise water and white sand. Really imagine you are there. Name one thing you can see, smell, taste, hear and touch/feel.

2. Offer yourself compassion.

Cup your hands and place them on your heart, with pressure. Acknowledge the moment hurts/is causing pain or suffering; say it out loud if appropriate. “This really hurts.” Then give yourself something you need. Maybe it’s a walk alone, or cup of tea, or warm bath or a boundary for someone who is asking for more than you want to give.

3. Practice the “just like me” exercise.

If you’re having a tough conversation with someone that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, it can help to remember this person is “just like you” in many ways. Let’s say my family member voted for a person I don’t support, and we get into a heated discussion. I might want to pause, step away and think of a few phrases in my head like, “This person has been disappointed in life, just like me. This person wants to be happy, just like me. This person is doing what they believe to be right, just like me. This person wants to be loved, just like me.”

A mindful breathing exercise paired with any of the above helps too. Breathe in to a count of four, hold for a count of four, slowly breathe out to a count of eight, stay empty of breath for a count of four, and repeat.

*Note: this isn’t about pushing away or ignoring “bad” feelings. This is about giving yourself what you need in the moment when you aren’t in a place where you can process in a healthy way.

I hope these tips help support you this holiday season. If you’d like more tools to be happier, more confident and calm, check out my 6-week course, Next Level You. We start soon, November 10th.

I am excited about my new book. I used to be overweight and called fat. "Fat Girl" was my nickname in grade school. I was told to lose weight and became anorexic as a teenager. I struggled with poor body image and self-esteem. Yoga changed my life. I was a "bad" yoga student. I wasn't "thin, flexible, coordinated or focused". Somehow I stuck with my practice and became a yoga teacher. I used to be a sugar and junk food addict. Yoga helped me be a healthy foodie. I truly believe that yoga can help you be healthy inside out. It helped me. I can't believe that Halloween is just around the corner and Thanksgiving is less than a month away. This year has been crazy and stressful for almost everyone. Remember to practice:

1. Self care - I often end my yoga class with a self-massage. Get the free Foot Reflexology e-Book

2. Gratitude - Pause before you eat to be thankful for the nourishing food or drink some tea. I love Herbal Goodness. They have the best organic, non-GMO Papaya Leaf tea. This caffeine-free tea helps support blood platelet function, and is loaded with antioxidants to boost immunity, aid digestion, and support energy and vitality. Get Papaya Leaf tea

3. Mindful meditation - Studies show that meditation can reduce anxiety and stress. Get the free mindfulness and sleep meditation guide

Have a Fun and Safe Halloween

I love my dog Sparky. The best thing I did was to adopt her in 2011. She's 11 years old and still acts like a puppy. We go on 3 to 4 walks every day. As the weather is getting cooler and sun is setting earlier, I walked her around a street that has many Halloween decorated homes before it got dark. It's better to take pictures of her under natural light since she's a black dog and tends to blend in at night. It's fun to dress her up and get into the spirit of Barktober Halloween. I give her the best food, brown rice and cooked chicken or pork. I also love American Paws jerky. All natural, crafted by pet parents like me and made in the USA. Don't buy dog food or treats that are made in China that are poisoning and killing pets. Sparky loves to pee on the grass. That's why I use DoggieLawn at home.
I love healthy snacks!

Let's avoid traditional candies and cut out sugar. Studies show that sugar is bad for our health and our teeth. Too much sugar causes inflammation which leads to diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Childhood obesity is a big problem. According to the CDC1 in 5 children and adolescents in the U.S is obese. The average American consumes 17 teaspoons of sugar every day. That adds up to about 57 pounds of added sugar a year. Try Ice Chips

Eat a healthy breakfast. Join the Championship Breakfast Challenge.

Rethink your Halloween treats. Try Key Eats Keto Snack Bars

For adults who plan to celebrate Halloween, host or join a virtual costume party. BYOB of wine
If you are a dog parent, dress up your dog for the SpookySpot costume contest before the 10/25 deadline.

If you'd rather drink tea, try dessert teas. I love Matcha. Studies show that Matcha is calming, high is antioxidants, boost brain function and helps you loose weight.

10-Day Cleanse & Detox Workshop

Did you know you have 5 different appetites? They are appetites for protein, carbs, fats, sodium, and calcium. This five-appetite system works seamlessly in the natural world. But in our modern lives, filled with ultra-processed products like cookies and cereal, pizza and ice cream, it can't work as it should. "Ultra-processed foods tend to be low in protein and high in cheap carbs and fats, (so we need to need more) to get our target intake of protein.say Raubenheimer and Simpson

I've developed a 10-Day workshop to further support your Fall Wellness

Learn how to do intermittent fasting and eat more fiber and protein the right way so you won't feel hungry. Studies show that most women need 25 grams of fiber and 50 to 60 grams of protein. Our modern diet of processed foods does not have enough fiber and protein to keep us healthy. Easy ways to boost fiber in your daily diet are foods like:

1 large pear with skin (7 grams)

1 cup fresh raspberries (8 grams)

½ medium avocado (5 grams)

1 ounce almonds (3.5 grams)

1 cup cooked pearled barley (6 grams)

Eat a plant-based diet. Check out Blue Zones Diet and their meal planner

"When increasing fiber, be sure to do it gradually and with plenty of fluids," per Holly Larson, MS, RD a nutrition expert, freelance writer and owner of Grass Roots Nutrition in Oxford, OH.

Drink a cup of Matcha green tea every day or try the Wellness Gut Health Bundle.

Commit to doing this with all your heart and mind. Say to yourself "I love you and I'm worth it!"

Learn to make healthy meals that saves time and money.

Remember to drink enough water every day.

Got a sweet tooth? Try Ice Chips sugar free candy

Do something active like yoga 3-5 times a week. Yoga is one of my anti-aging secret. The other one is Glotrition Super Beauty Elixir. Unlike other grocery store collagen, it contains a patented Bioactive Collagen Peptide that has been clinically shown to increase skin firmness and reduce wrinkle depth in just 30 days. Hyaluronic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin C, and the Super Beauty Antioxidant Blend help to nourish skin cells and protect collagen fibers - the building block of our skin.
