Eating for a Healthy Mind + Body

My Healthy Breakfast Recipe

Yogurt Parfait - I mix a bit of Lifeway Strawberry Kefir with Trader Joe's plain low-fat yogurt, put some Quaker Low-Fat Natural Granola and a few slices of strawberries on top to make a healthy breakfast.  That way, I get whole grain (good carbs), calcium, probiotic, protein, fiber and feel satisfied. What we eat and how we eat has a great effect on our sense of well-being. "We are what we eat." It doesn't take any more time to eat healthy than junk foods; it's just a matter of making healthy choices. Make the change in your diet gradually so it's possible to train the body to like healthier foods instead of junk. If you try to make too many drastic changes in a short time, your body may simply rebel. It's easier to change one meal or food group at a time.

Over the years, Ilse Klipper (the author of Coming Into Harmony) has made many changes in her own diet like eliminating refined sugar, coffee, soda, meat and processed foods. Now, we both enjoy fresh  fruits and veggies, eating healthy snacks and drinking herbal teas. As we have learned to follow a healthier diet, we notice that our bodies are becoming healthier and stronger. Each week, I will follow her exercises/ guidelines for a happy mind-body relationship and share with you what I've learned. Today, I'm reminded by the book that everything is in perfect order, just as our lives have been perfectly designed to work according to their own plan. The shift in focus from external to internal is a major turning point in the way we experience reality. We're conditioned to look outside for happiness (to pursue it) so it's hard to change. Meditate, turn within to cultivate a positive outlook - be in touch with the happiness, peace and harmony that is inside us. Observing the mind, converting negative thoughts into positive ones isn't easy but this is a powerful practice. Karma = the law of cause + effect. We reap what we've sown. Sooner or later, everything balances out. Do we have a + or - balance?

Instead of focusing on what's happening around us, we can consider the larger purpose behind the scenes. Understanding perfect balance can lessen our fears about the turmoil in this world. Then we can use our higher understanding to do good, to share our love and compassion by helping others as well as ourselves. If you have a bad situation like chronic pain, long-term unemployment or a serious illness, you could either lie in bed or sit at home feeling depressed or you could face your reality with a positive attitude and examine how to improve your condition. With a positive attitude, you might be able to use your thoughts to speed your healing or recovery. Even if the illness is terminal, you could still face each day with hope and love rather than fear because your higher self/ spirit is indestructible and eternal. Affirmative Actions + A Positive Attitude = Power to Change Direction + Better Quality of Life.

Fit Fun Dogs

Do you love or own a dog? Want to have
a Fit Fun dog? Connect with other dog
lovers. Join us. Daily exercise and good
nutrition = Fit Fun Dogs. We are a
healthy online pet store and a social
networking site.
Say "hi" to my dog Sparky, a 2-year old female that I adopted from the shelter. We are a part of the Fit-Twist family. I am also an event planner who organizes Fit Fun activities for dog owners with my Fun-Dogs group. It's free to join and most events are cheap or free. There's a cost to running this group so we are looking for supporting members or sponsors. Say no to puppy mills and adopt a dog or find a reputable breeder at AKC. I am a member of SPCALA and HSUS
Doga: Yoga for Dogs
If you enjoy practicing yoga, perhaps your dog will too. Dogs are already very adept at stretching and getting themselves into a peaceful state of relaxation, so they are a natural when it comes to yoga. What exactly is doga? “The class is just like any other yoga class I would teach, but the dog is incorporated into all the poses.”  Doga instructor, Suzi Teitelman said. Doga includes relaxing massage, stretching, rubbing, omming, loving, flowing and breathing.

The Benefits of Doga
Just like people after a good yoga session, dogs seem to feel happy, excited and free. Some even seem to feel proud. The long-term benefits of doga are better health, flexible and toned bodies, and a closer bond with their human.  Not only does doga have all kinds of benefits, it gives you a loving experience with your dog.  I want to teach a free doga class for a group.

Tips
Invest in exercise and healthy food to take care of yourself and your dog. Don't think you're saving money by getting cheap, mostly junk food. We are what we eat. U.S.A is the fattest country. 70% of Americans are now overweight says the report, a number that will balloon to 75% in 2020. Food researchers indict the couch-and-mouse lifestyle, with people watching more T.V. and clicking online. That's why I'm on the PCTV Diet.

When You Eat Affects Your Sleep

According to Dr. Daemon Jones, when you eat can affect your ability to have a good night’s sleep. Difficulty in sleeping is related to many factors including mental stresses like anxiety and depression, daily habits/ behaviors, hormonal levels, medications and food choices. If you're struggling with sleeping problem or insomnia, it is important to speak to your physician to get help addressing the causes of the problem. Insomnia is defined as a disorder that makes it hard to fall asleep/ stay asleep or both.

When you eat food can impact your ability to enjoy sleep appropriately. Ideally, Dr. Jones recommends that people eat 3 to 4 hours before going to sleep to give their bodies time to process and digest the food. If you eat 3 hours or less before going to sleep, this prevents the relaxation of the body for sleep because you activate your digestive system to begin to process the food. I agree that it's healthier to stop eating 3 hours before bedtime, but sometimes, I crave something sweet. Then my choice would be an apple or a small serving of Ciao Bella Gelato or the Blood Orange Sorbet with 60 cal, 16 g of sugar and no fat per 1/2 cup of serving. It's made with natural ingredients like organic cane juice, blood orange juice and lemon juice.

Then I stay up a bit later to play with my dog Sparky or read a book. According to researchers at the University of Maryland, people who read often are happier than those who watch TV - even if the plot of the book is depressing.

Diet Mistake

There is no quick fix when it comes to healthy eating. "A healthy diet relies on a lifelong commitment to eating the right foods and eating the right way," says Sari Greaves, RD, an American Dietetic Association (ADA) spokeswoman. Don't try fad diets to lose weight because they'll derail your healthy eating plan.

Beware of One-Food Wonders

One diet promises that you can lose 10 pounds in a week by eating as much as you want -- as long as what you're eating only one food. Bad idea. If you go on an extreme, short-term diet, "you're setting yourself up to be very hungry and then bingeing," says Marjorie Nolan, MS, RD, CDN, CPT, a registered dietitian. "The bottom line is, if a product or diet sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Weight loss should be a gradual process in which you lose no more than 1 pound a week by eating a well-rounded diet," Greaves says. (Source: www.webmd.com)

With my healthy eating plan, you can eat from all food groups and feel satisfied. Yet, you'll still lose weight. Contact us now for a free consultation!
