The Future of Yoga

9/11 Laughter & Yoga for Peace

This conference is more than simply a professional gathering of yoga teachers. It is a call to action, a place to join as a community of yoga leaders and make a lasting contribution. Millions of Americans have embraced the path of yoga for its mental, spiritual and health benefits. If you are a yoga teacher, you inspire students and spread the yoga movement every day. Yoga teachers understand the benefits of yoga and the pressing needs of our society. Yoga Alliance believes that the practice of yoga is not just a market trend or industry but a social movement. True transformation is the objective at Yoga Alliance. There will be four community forums designed to be an opportunity for yoga teachers to discuss pressing issues facing our community and create constructive advice for the future. You don’t have to wait to share your thoughts on these important matters. We recently announced the YA Community, an online home for RYTs to connect with fellow yoga teachers and make a lasting contribution to the future of yoga. The conversations started in the online forums will lead to the real life discussions at the conference.

Social networking has become one of the biggest tools teachers are now using to promote classes and workshops. A daily or weekly post on Facebook, Twitter, etc. of your teaching schedule can help bring students in the door. Keeping students coming back is a challenge particularly as the weather gets warmer and people want to be outside. I'm offering Yoga at the Park on Saturdays at 9 am, Stoner Park. 1835 Stoner Ave., L.A, 90025. RSVP to attend or show interest. If 3 or more people RSVP, I'll email the details.

9/17 Seniors Arts Fest 11 am - 4 pm Santa Monica Senior Recreation Center, 1450 Ocean Avenue (closest cross street is Santa Monica Blvd)
Zumba class from 1 to 1:45 pm, a laughter workshop from 2 to 3 pm, and a drum circle outside from 3 to 4 pm. An art exhibit inside and also a chance to decorate a canvas bag as well as some other art activities outside the center. It's a great festival for all ages, so come move your body with Zumba, laugh with Kim Sebert at her laughter workshop, make something at a booth, drum at the drumming circle and view some art too!

9/24 Rally around Coral Trees with Betty White in Brentwood 2-3 pm at Brentwood Gardens Courtyard - A festive rally hosted by our own Brentwood star, Betty White. T-shirts and totes will be sold to raise money for the Coral Trees. Everyone invited. Call 310-472-9775 for more information.

More events will be posted later. If you are a health care professional, fitness instructor, personal trainer or yoga/ pilates teacher and want to network with a healthy group, contact me for details.

Things I Love In San Francisco

Biked & Walked across the Bridge
$20 Foot Massage in Chinatown - Just walk through Grant Avenue. Flickr photos.
Dylan's all-day bike rental - I got a discount at the hostel and paid $22 instead. Biked and walked from North Beach across Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito. Took the ferry back on Sunday.
Green Tortoise Hostel - I felt like a family guest at this cool, green place + got the best value for my money.
  1. Free Daily breakfast
  2. Free Internet and wi-fi
  3. Free Dinner 3 times a week (Love Friday's Thai curry and vegetable- yummy!)
  4. Free Linens
  5. Free Day Luggage Storage
  6. Free Pool Table and Foosball
  7. Free Sauna
  8. Free Parties
  9. Free Spacious Under-bed Lockers (Padlock NOT included)
  10. And most of all…Free to be yourself!
Green Dreams wine tasting tour on Monday - Elie's tours are rated "excellent" by 165 travelers + me on Trip Advisor. Like the "Brief History of Wine" and his informative talk. I won a bottle of 2009 Oakley Five Reds wine at end of tour when he quizzed us about what we've learned. Also got printout of Elie's Favorite Cheap Eats!
Free Tai Chi Classes at Washington Square Park - I joined the ladies for a short session 2 days in a roll at around 8 am but they start at 7:30 am every day.
Rented a bike from Dylan's for just $18 (special deal) - Biked to Haight-Ashbury, my favorite area because they have cool stores, peace signs everywhere and the Red Vic. Stopped by the Conservatory of Flowers (Free entrance first Tuesday monthly) on the way to Clement Street for lunch and dessert. Took bus to the Ferry Building to check out Farmers Market and biked back to  hostel for a well-deserved rest. Then, I took a casual stroll through North Beach after returning my bike. Wanted to get a foot massage again, but didn't have enough time. Used a bit of Sunbreeze balm and tried to do a nice self-massage on my tired feet. Wished I could stay longer. Didn't want to go home because I am in love with San Francisco!

I Dream of Peace

9/11 Laughter and Yoga for Peace

Where we all get along as living beings
Peace within and without - Om, shanti, om
In our action, hearts, mind
Now, this moment as we breathe
Inhale fresh air, shoulders back
Stand tall, stretch our arms up to the sky
Gather gratitude, love and peace
Exhale, let go of negativity or stress
Circle arms back to our hearts
Prayer pose for compassion
It's a new day, let us salute the sun
Thank Mother Nature for its bounty
As peaceful change-makers
We lead the way and dare to dream
Practice what we preach, do good
Be part of this revolution for peace
Read positive books and poems
Try yoga even if you're scared or meditate
World Peace today, tomorrow, always

Aasato ma sat gamaya
Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya
mritryor ma amritam gamaya
Lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu
OM Shanti Shanti Shantih OM
Lead us from darkness to Light
From death to life
from ignorance to the bliss of knowing Union
May all Beings be happy and free
OM Preace Peace Peace OM
(Source: Satya Yoga)
P.S. This poem is inspired by the peace signs I see everywhere in San Francisco, by Sami's art, and a poetry book I got at City Lights Bookstore. I love books and yoga. They changed my life! Hope they'll help change yours too.
