Healthy Communities

e-News

The Innovative Ideas Challenge (IIC) is a new grant-making program available to organizations from communities not funded under the Building Healthy Communities plan. We're seeking to fund innovative ideas to address the persistent and emerging health issues that impact underserved communities in California. Specifically, IIC seeks to identify and fund promising practices that are aligned with the 10 outcomes or 4 big results from the Building Healthy Communities plan.

The objectives of IIC are:

  • Engage a broad set of innovation partners to develop and test effective models developed by affected communities.
  • Establish a pool of original ideas that will "dramatically improve" the health status of underserved individuals and communities in California.
  • Support innovators who can rapidly engage in work that will promote fundamental health improvements in the health status of all Californians. This can be through new ventures or expansions of already existing efforts. Special attention will be paid to proposals that are public/private partnerships.
Due date: September 1, 2012

From 2010 to 2020, The Endowment is investing the majority of its resources into the 10-year, $1 billion Building Healthy Communities plan which seeks to create communities where prevention is a priority and is reflected in the physical environment and socioeconomic conditions of those neighborhoods. Coalitions of residents, youth, community-based organizations, business, law enforcement, and schools, among others, have joined together in 14 geographically diverse places to tackle the issues that are holding back the health of their neighborhoods. With an approach focusing on policy and systems change, they are addressing the root causes of bad health in their communities.
The California Endowment makes grants to organizations and institutions that directly benefit the health and well-being of Californians. Support is provided to nonprofit organizations with a valid tax exemption status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and that are classified as a public charity.

Small Business Grants

Free Resources

Chase and LivingSocial are sponsoring "Mission: Small Business℠" a grant program awarding up to $3 million to small business owners nationwide.
The Program, which will provide up to 12 individual grants of $250,000 was developed to provide small businesses with resources needed to make a positive impact on their business.
Mission: Small Business℠ invites small business owners who have been in business for at least two years and have less than 100 employees to apply for a Grant for their business. Small business owners will be required to tell us why their business is unique, outline a proposed plan for utilizing the Grant to grow their business and describe how the business is involved with its community.
Consumers are encouraged to get involved by clicking the "Support" button at missionsmallbusiness.com and voting for their favorite registered small businesses. Each time a consumer clicks to support small business, Chase will add five dollars to the Grant Pool, up to a maximum of $3 million. Each registered small business must receive at least 250 votes to be considered for a Grant. The voting period is open from May 7, 2012 through June 30, 2012.
At the end of the Voting Period, small business applicants that have received 250 votes will have their applications evaluated and Grant Recipients will be chosen. Grant Recipients will be announced on or before September 15, 2012. Go to: https://www.missionsmallbusiness.com

Startup Open
GEW 50 Announcement: October 15
Grand Prize Winners Announcement: November 14
startupopen.com
Startup Open, a featured event of Global Entrepreneurship Week, is a global competition to identify and recognize startup companies founded between GEW 2011 and GEW 2012. It is open to any entrepreneurs who have just started, or are about to start, a new venture and have a “startup moment” between November 22, 2011, and November 20, 2012.
What is a startup moment? A startup moment can be when a business is incorporated; doors open for business; a first sale is completed; outside funding is secured; or something else that can be interpreted as the company is “open for business.”
Startup Open will announce and recognize the global ‘GEW 50’ – 50 of the most promising ventures from around the world, which will be selected by a range of criteria including strength of concept, growth projections, and knowledge of the market. Those 50 companies will then compete for a handful of prizes with the winners announced during Global Entrepreneurship Week, November 12-18, 2012.
Applicants will have until September 15 to submit their startup. On October 15, the GEW 50 will be announced. Those companies will have until October 18 to review the judges’ comments and tweak their applications. The final round of judges will tally their scores and announce the winners during Global Entrepreneurship Week 2012.

Health Referral Service

I founded Fit-Twist: a health referral service because I realized that being healthy is not just about how you look on the outside but how you feel from the inside. I am a yoga teacher who partners with other businesses or groups to bring health and beauty to you via the internet as well as health events. My mission is to help women be healthy inside out. Stress is the leading cause of illness and the reason for two thirds of the total visits to the Physician. Most women are overworked and need a healthy way to reduce stress. 70% of adults are overweight or obese. I will make it fun, easy and convenient for them to be healthy inside out.  My target market is women in their 30s and 50s and my goal is to help them be well in all areas of their lives. I plan to offer a Corporate Wellness Program with Fit-Twist Yoga that helps reduce stress. My goal is to help employees or the staff will feel more energized and relaxed at the same time in just one class. I guarantee that you will feel better and healthier after taking my classes regularly for 3 to 4 weeks. Contact me now for a free consultation if you are a company that wants a wellness program. Find out how cost effective it is to hire me. Exercise + Nutrition = Health.

Yoga Benefits - Improved flexibility, more strength, better concentration, health and well-being. Among women with breast cancer, those who did yoga had a steeper daily drop in cortisol (stress) levels than women who just stretched. Some studies suggest that if levels of the stress hormone stay high throughout the day, a woman’s cancer is more likely to worsen. September is National Yoga Month:
designed to build awareness of yoga's proven health benefits and provide people with actionable guidance and tools to enhance their own well-being. This grassroots awareness campaign inspires both youths and adults to take responsibility for their well-being by focusing on prevention and healthy lifestyle choices. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - find out how yoga can help breast cancer and other cancer patients. http://www.cityofhope.org

Charge Up

3 Es of "feeling charged": Energy, Engagement, Enthusiasm

Caged Life: Focus on being safe.
Comfortable Life: Focus on being accepted.
Charged Life: Focus on purpose

Focus on serving & contributing to the world. Look for opportunities to change & grow.

1. Control your outlook and character
2. Control for new: the brain naturally seeks novelty and challenge (I love to learn new things)
3. Competence: the ability to understand, perform in and master our world

Consider your career. Do you understand your role and goals at work? Do you feel that you know enough to advance? Are you confident of your skills, talent, knowledge and abilities? Are you learning and contributing consistently? (If not, consider getting advise from a mentor, a supervisor or a career coach)

Are you a Charger?
