Good Fair Food

Growing food and justice sustainably

"There are about a billion people undernourished today, far more than there were 30 years ago. But, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), we produce 17% more calories per person today than we did 30 years ago, and far more than enough for everyone on the planet to have plenty to eat. The challenge of global hunger today isn’t  whether we can produce enough food. It’s that close to a billion people don’t have access to that food. And people trying to buy food find that the cheapest calories are often the least healthy. We  have over a billion people around the world who are obese, and a billion going hungry. Our global food system is failing more and more people. This is a market and policy failure, not a lack of production. If we don’t get to these systemic challenges, it’s not going to matter much how much food we can produce in 2050—many more than a billion will be left behind." Jim Harkness stated in his presentation at the National Food Policy Conference, organized by Consumers Federation of America.

1. We have to address global poverty.
2. We have to acknowledge the crushing effect two decades of Free Trade has had on food security.
3. Financial deregulation has created chaos in agriculture markets.
4. We must have serious climate change policy that reduces emissions, and supports climate-resilient agriculture.
5. We need to support the ability of food insecure countries to build or rebuild their own food systems.
6. We also need to integrate public health into our food system.
7. We must call for more effective and democratic system of global institutions.

P.S. Many women feel guilty or selfish when I advise some "me" time because they are not used to putting themselves first. We are natural caregivers and often get stressed out trying to take care of business and others in our families. When do we find time to recharge? My episode, "Destressing for Busy Women" will begin "Airing" on Friday April 13th at 12 AM PDT/ 3 AM EDT at www.womensradio.com

Mark your calendars for Equal Pay Day on April 17, 2012! BPW Foundation is a leader in supporting Equal Pay Day, which is held annually in April to signify the point into a year that a woman must work to earn what a man made the previous year. Inspired by Nobel Peace Prize recipient Dr. Muhammad Yunus' revolutionary micro financing breakthrough, Yoga Gives Back supports micro credit programs in India which lend small loans to women in particular, who have no access to capital. Additionally, we developed "Sister Aid" programs where YGB directly funds education, vocational training and micro credit programs for struggling mothers, girls and orphans. Women are the best poverty fighters—the most effective return on investment for development dollars is an investment in women. With $25 a month, mothers can start their own businesses; girls and orphans can go to school. http://www.yogagivesback.org

Good Food

Eat Fresh Produce!

A Good Food Economy in L.A is a part of the economy of a country at peace with its neighbors and its environment - the air, the land, the water and the creatures living in, on and under it. It is the local embodiment of a regional, national and international economy in which people have useful work to do at fair wages, affordable access to housing, health care, education and a secure retirement. A Good Food Economy will:
  • Deliver to every single resident of Los Angeles enough Good Food to ensure them a healthy, vigorous, and satisfying life.
  • Help produce useful work at fair wages for residents of Los Angeles and the entire Southern California region.
  • Enable the residents of the city and the surrounding region to control decisions about how and what food is made available to them.
  • Prevent those decisions from being made in far-away places by individuals remote from the life of the residents.
  • Be a sustainable, self-reliant, localized economy owned and operated largely by residents of Los Angeles.
  • Produce health, wealth and justice, by, for and under the capable, practiced control of, all of the residents of Los Angeles and the entire Southern California region.
The Education & Outreach Working Group is focused on raising public awareness about Good Food issues.  Our projects include launching a website to serve as a Good Food information hub, hosting a Good Food for All Speaker Series, and working on other outreach initiatives. Good food educational efforts must encompass people from all age groups, communities and professions.  Children can learn about where their food comes from and how to eat healthfully.  Adults, business owners, community leaders and policy makers can be educated on the many issues that encompass the Good Food movement, and how they can support good food options at home and in the workplace. http://www.goodfoodla.org

Its Goals Include:
  • Coordinating activities in Los Angeles for national Food Day (held annually on October 24th), in partnership with RENEW LA.
  • Organizing Good Food Day LA for spring 2012, in partnership with the Office of Mayor Villaraigosa.
  • Establishing Good Food for All Speaker Series, in partnership with the California Endowment.
  • Advising and assist the L.A Food Policy Council with educational content for its website and social media strategy.
I believe in and support the Good Food movement. Please comment, join us and share the benefits of Good Food on March 31!

P.S. 80% of adults will suffer back pain at some point in their lives, spend an average of $6,100 on medical care each year. I am partnering with Hanna Kim at Sae Arc to cross-market our businesses. I have a health blog. My mission is to be a health/ wellness referral service and resource for L.A. County. www.SaeArc.com
